Telephone HMRC Scam Warning

Warning Regarding Telephone Scam
POLICE WARNING REGARDING HMRC PHONE SCAM

Police are investigating two recent incidents of phone fraud in East Lothian where a caller, falsely claiming to be from HMRC, has stated that there is a warrant out for their arrest if they did not pay an outstanding tax bill.

In both instances, the people in receipt of the call, who were both elderly and vulnerable, were asked to purchase pre-paid cards, such as Amazon and Google play, as payment for the outstanding 'debt'.

Please remember, a genuine caller wouldn’t demand payment or details over the phone.

IF IN DOUBT, END THE CALL.

Please pass this warning onto relatives/friends/neighbours that may be at risk of falling for this scam.
