Dirleton and the wider area of East Lothian are excellent for a variety of coastland and inland walking from strolls to something more strenuous. Dirleton is on the John Muir Way which now stretches 215km (134 miles) from Helensburgh in the west to Dunbar, John Muir's birthplace, in the east.
